As this is a bar for geeks and gamers, which means I consider it like an on-going con for adults (grin!), I want to know if, as at a con, there's a policy in place for guys who creep on girls. There have been increasing reports of guys at cons harassing and stalking women. I don't want to go to a bar where I have to be on guard against creepers.
Creeper policy
I think this just applies to life in general, video game related or not.
No matter where you go, people will creep on people. It's inevitable.
It is only "inevitable" because people think it's "inevitable". We can stop it if we don't tolerate it. It's been an increasing problem at cons; fortunately more people have been speaking up in protest.
Here's a link to relevant posts by Genevieve Valentine on the incident at the 2012 Readercon and how it was handled by the Concom.
There was a time not all that long ago that society just would not put up with anti-social behavior such as creeping. If everyone stood up for everyones basic rights, such as the right not to be harrased, this would be a non-issue. In some ways we as a society have degressed. Call me weird but I still stand up and say something when I see anti-social behavior.
AFK doesn't have security, so much as an immune system. The details are vague and boring, but basically it'll go about like so:
- If you ask for help, you'll get it. Practically everyone in the place knows how to reach an authority figure in 30 seconds.
- If you're in a building with a ring-shaped bar floor, attached videogame consoles, a full restaurant, and a shelf full of board games, and you're asked to leave someone alone and can't do it, you're not trying very hard. Harassment stands way out.
- If you start a fight, you and your opponent will not fight each other. You will most likely each be subdued by two, maybe five trained heavy fighters. Some of them will make an effort not to really hurt you, but if Pike and Morbid get you, they'll make crafty little gum wrapper chains with your skin. (Just kidding, probably, about Pike.)
It's okay to relax. Hell, dress provocatively. All things being equal, you're probably safer than you would be at home.
